A 70m2 Attic Apartment in Barcelona with Built-In Furniture
MH.AP Studio designed an Attic for David in Barcelona with clever built-in furniture and storage throughout making the most of the 70 square meters of space. The original flat was dark and compartmentalized with small rooms that missed out on natural light. To make the space work, they reconfigured the layout to include a hallway that does more than offer a path between points A and B – it’s now a multifunctional thoroughfare that houses a bench seat, dressing table, and desk on one end with the kitchen and closets on the other.
A warm, matte-finish MDF is used throughout helping to tie the spaces together as natural light filters in to keep it bright. An L-shaped, built-in sofa with bright blue cushions adds a bold statement to the open plan living room and kitchen.
Just behind the hallway wall, there are two bedrooms with a bathroom in the middle. The larger bedroom opens up to the living room via sliding panel doors.
The bathroom just off the hallway is clad in grass green tiles, perfectly contrasting the apartment’s brown elements. The sink is placed just outside of the bathroom, a decision that was inspired by Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye project.

Bernard Dubois + Isaac Reina Explore Geometric Perspectives in Latest Collection
Belgian architect Bernard Dubois and Spanish designer Isaac Reina recently debuted a furniture collection designed for Brussels-based gallery, MANIERA. The collection consists of eight different objects, including two chairs, a lamp, a folding table, and more. Each piece plays with geometric perspectives and materials to yield minimal designs stripped from all unnecessary details.
Due to the minimal nature of each piece, material plays a large role in how the objects are perceived. Dubois and Reina selected high-quality natural and black-lacquered leather and wood as the primary materials to inspire an elegance that subtly contrasts with the intentionally playful curved and straight lines found throughout the collection.
The designers adhered to traditional techniques during the design process, citing the work of Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara and artists Ellsworth Kelly and Imi Knoebel as main sources of inspiration.
As the founder of a leather goods brand, Reina has become particularly intertwined with leather. The designer describes the material as “sensuous, living and highly tactile.” For this collection, Reina and Dubois were particularly interested in exploring leather’s light sensitivity, which allows it to beautifully age over time.
To bring the collection for MANIERA to life, Reina combined his knowledge of leather with Dubois’ bold use of geometric forms. Dubois has employed a similar design ethos in the past, notably when he designed the interior of the Brussels Aesop store and Reina’s leather goods store in Paris.
The collection is currently on view at MANIERA Gallery in Brussels until May 9, 2020.

An ‘Inner Light’ Glows within Intersect by Lexus NYC
Intersect by Lexus NYC is but one of three permanent exhibition spaces hosted by the luxury automaker around the globe (the other two located in Toyko and Dubai), each dedicated as a unique cultural and creative nexus. The New York venue’s latest venture, ‘Inner Light’, invites the public into a womb of light and sound – an interactive installment composed by the aid of the sustained note of technology.
Designed by conceptual lighting artists Dave & Gabe (whose past collaborations include Sonos and Google) in partnership with singer/songwriter Jhené Aiko, ‘Inner Light’ was conceived to tap into music’s power to heal through sound and meditation. Intersect by Lexus NYC visitors are invited to “duet” with a grand piano placed within a glowing circle of LED lights.
Inner Light’s immersive installation comprises a 360-degree spatialized sound system encircling 88 LED columns that in turn wrap around an autonomous playing grand piano. The instrument is programmed to play Aiko’s composition, Triggered, with each of the 88 keys linked to a corresponding light that glows with the colors representing the seven chakras (the main energy centers of the body according to yogic philosophy).
Alongside being audience to the autonomous performance, guests are also welcome to “duet” with the piano, enabling an interactive collaboration between set composition and introduced improvisation.
While video of the performance isn’t yet available online, videos of Dave & Gabe’s past sound and light installations offer insight of what visitors might expect when they cross through the threshold:
‘Inner Light” opened on February 28 and will continue on thru April 6, with guests welcome between the hours of 11am – 10pm. For further information, check out the Intersect by Lexus website.

BD Barcelona and Belén Moneo Rethink Scrap Materials in REmix Collection
BD Barcelona Design recently revealed REmix Collection vol.5 is designed by Belén Moneo with a focus on her interests in plasticity, geometry, material, light, transparency, and color. The overarching goal of the REmix Project is to give otherwise obsolete scrap materials a second chance at life through recovering, recycling, and reusing.
In 2001, Rafael Moneo – Belén Moneo’s father and architect – designed the Romana Table. Now she faced the challenge of converting deadstock table legs from the Romana into limited edition bookshelves and a colorful collection of bookends.
The Emérita shelf is a powerful piece, utilizing BD’s signature material of Plexiglas and those geometric wooden table legs mentioned above, a floating sensation is created through the viewer’s perception. When inspected horizontally, Emérita reveals a horizontal plane full of shadows that was the jumping off point for the accompanying bookends design.

Minimal Solutions: 10 Residential Projects up to 60 m² in Portugal
Designing small spaces is a challenge that is common for architects because of the increase in urban densities and smaller spaces dedicated to homes and apartments. For Portuguese architects, dealing with the small scale and its details is something already established in their project thinking, given the way they transform the compartmentalized plans of secular buildings through rehabilitation and refurbishment that provide a contemporary and functional atmosphere to their inhabitants. We gathered ten projects, using photographs and plans, as a few examples of this Portuguese talent.
